From March 4 to 17, twenty-five athletes and six coaches headed to Tucson, Arizona for a pre-season training camp.
The camp had a number of objectives, the main one being to provide a pleasant, safe setting in which to carry out a block of training sessions in preparation for the season. Physiologically, the program focused on high-volume basic endurance training in all three disciplines, with a few sessions at more competition-specific paces. The Tucson environment offered plenty of variety in the courses and introduced technical aspects such as climbs, descents and turns.
On a technical level, athletes were able to benefit from the advice of several qualified coaches and take part in training sessions that included tactical aspects such as platoon positioning and effort management. Of course, the camp also had a strong social dimension and an emphasis on complementary skills (training preparation, nutrition, recovery, autonomy).
Among the camp’s highlights were the ascent of Mont Lemmon (34 kilometers at 5%), which was a great personal challenge, as well as the descent, which offered thrills and superb panoramas, and the Cactus Cup, a small, friendly team competition. The athletes also enjoyed getting together, bonding and sharing their daily lives with people they don’t often meet. Congratulations to all the athletes, and a special mention to the coaches who provided impeccable supervision and logistical support during the stay.
