Press release: Organized sports players encouraged by measures announced

March 12, 2021

The entire Triathlon Québec team welcomes today’s announcement by Minister Isabelle Charest. Many players in the sporting world had been calling for a gradual and safe return to supervised sporting activities as early as March, and the message has been heard. The resumption of training for all supervised sports disciplines in the orange zone as of March 26 and the relief for federated indoor and outdoor sports in the red zone are a relief for us and our members. This announcement is a step in the right direction, demonstrating public health’s confidence in federated sport as a safe way to practice.

Montreal, March 12, 2021 – The plan to revitalize sports in Quebec was clarified in an announcement by the Minister for Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Ms. Isabelle Charest, and Dr. Richard Massé, strategic medical advisor to the Public Health Department.

In the current context of the pandemic, the news announced is encouraging for organized and supervised sport. SPORTSQUÉBEC, the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and the Association québécoise du loisir municipal (AQLM) were eagerly awaiting the measures following the submission of a harmonized recovery plan to public health on February 26.

“The resumption of supervised training in the orange zone and the reductions in supervised practice in the red zone are encouraging news for the Quebec sports community. With our members and partners, our mission was to do everything we could to promote a safe return to organized sport for as many young people as possible across Quebec. We believe that a return to organized training will contribute to their mental and physical well-being,” explains Julie Gosselin, President of SPORTSQUÉBEC. “We’re also delighted to know that a plan is in place, and that flexibility will be introduced gradually and in the short term. As a result, our members can better plan, organize and communicate the next stages of their activities accordingly. The ball is now in the court of all organized sport stakeholders in Quebec, to demonstrate to public health that this recovery will be done in an effective and sustainable way.”

“We are delighted to announce the resumption of supervised training for all young people in Quebec. Moreover, we firmly believe that young athletes in Quebec can make a significant contribution to the application of instructions aimed at adopting impeccable health ethics in a safe environment. We are more than confident in the role that young people can play in the fight against COVID-19, and we are convinced that they are part of the solution,” said Gustave Roel, President and CEO of the RSEQ.

Sport organized and supervised by sports federations, the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), municipalities and regional recreation and sports units (URLS) worked together with the Office of the Minister for Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women, Isabelle Charest, to get the sport back on track.
